ASAKUSA THE SOFT LANDING
The overnight from Jakarta lands at Haneda before seven. One through train and a short taxi later both cases are behind a Rokku front desk, and the day is built backwards from a table at seven: a seated breakfast the moment the bags are down, one small craft house, an air-conditioned hour that is allowed to be dull, a shower, and the river at sunset.
NH856 touches down at 06:50; allow an unhurried hour and a half for immigration, the belt and a first coffee. The Keikyu line runs straight through onto the Toei Asakusa line, so there is no change of train with the cases — about forty minutes — and a short taxi covers the last stretch to the hotel. Both cases are down between quarter past nine and quarter to ten.
Do not sightsee before eating. FEBRUARY KITCHEN is a walk-in a few minutes from the bag drop: share the croque madame and the breakfast French toast, take two coffees, and let the flight leave your legs. Then one stop only — the free Edo Taito crafts house, woodblock and lacquer and cut glass made by Shitamachi hands — and an air-conditioned table at THE LOUNGE until the room is ready.
Leave the room at five. Walk through Sensō-ji while the shutters are still up, cross the Sumida River Walk to the east bank, and give the Japanese garden, Hyōtan Pond and Ushijima Shrine the fifty minutes they are worth. The sun goes down at 18:08 behind the Skytree side of the water. Roughly three kilometres in all — then a taxi, not a second hot walk.
Nishi-Asakusa, one minute from the Tsukuba Express A2 exit: a charcoal yakiniku house whose own sign insists that high heat is best. Sunken-hearth tatami on all three floors, every seat non-smoking, two hours to a seating. Seven o'clock is chosen but not held — the call has to be made between noon and three, or after five.
This one is genuinely optional. If nine o'clock finds you awake, the way back to the hotel runs Kaminarimon, the shuttered Nakamise arcade, Hōzōmon, and the five-storey pagoda with the Main Hall lit behind it — thirty-five to forty-five minutes, hotel by about twenty to ten. The outside stays lit until eleven; the hall itself closed at five. Decide at the table, not on the pavement.
Rokku, Nishi-Asakusa — two nights. Check-in from 15:00; the second-floor self-cloak takes eligible cases from the morning, and the front desk handles anything at 15 kg or over.
