THE DAY OF SINGLE CHOICES
2026
DAY XIV · 15 SEPTEMBER · 誕生日
ONE OF EACH, AND NEVER TWO
It is a birthday, and the plan answers it by subtracting. One breakfast — the hotel dining room or the bakery, never both. One shop — the house with the garden in Nakameguro or the vintage room in Aoyama, never both. One museum, one counter, one bar. The city gets crossed twice to buy ninety empty minutes in the room before dinner, and that crossing is on purpose. Nothing is held: the counter has seven seats and no booking, the bar takes no reservations at all, and the request for the breakfast table has still not been sent.
OUT AT ABOUT 07:25 FOR AN 08:00 TABLE; THE EXACT ROUTE IS NOT LOCKED
II
TORANOMON → NAKAMEGURO, SOUTH-WEST
THE ONE HOUR OUTDOORS, ABOUT 09:50 TO 10:35, AND THE FIRST THING CUT
III
NAKAMEGURO → KYOBASHI, BY METRO
¥418 FOR THE PARTY — THE ONLY PUBLISHED FARE ON THE WHOLE DAY
IV
ARTIZON → MITSUI, THE SHORTEST LEG
BACK BY 15:45 FOR THE BATH; TAKE A TAXI IF THE HEAT IS WINNING
V
MITSUI → SHIROKANE, THEN EBISU, THEN HOME
LEAVE 17:15 FOR 18:00; THE BAR IS FIFTEEN MINUTES' WALK FROM THE COUNTER
A double crossing. Minato at eight, Meguro by ten, then the whole way back north-east to Kyōbashi and Nihonbashi for the museum and the bath — and then south-west again for the counter and the bar. Two full traverses in one day, bought deliberately: the ninety minutes in the room between 15:45 and 17:15 are what they are for. Only one fare on the day is a published number, ¥418 for the party out of Nakameguro. Everything else sits inside a birthday transport allowance of ¥6,000 to ¥10,000, because the chain was never locked.
Fifth floor of the Heritage Wing, and on a Tuesday the room opens for breakfast and nothing else — 07:00 to 09:30, no lunch, no dinner. The Beau Jardin course is ¥6,500 a head with tax and fifteen per cent service already inside it: a juice, a vegetable salad, coffee or tea, and one spécialité each — the truffle-flavoured eggs Benedict and the Okura's own French toast, ordered one apiece and shared. The kitchen descends from Masakichi Ono, grand chef from 1969, who taught himself French to read the cookbooks, cooked alongside Robuchon and Bocuse, and is remembered as the father of French cuisine in Japan. Smart casual is enough. Cancel by the day before or pay the whole course. If the table cannot be had, Bricolage in Roppongi takes no reservations at all and belongs to Shinobu Namae of the three-starred L'Effervescence; fifteen minutes of queue is the cap. Neither has been asked.
The single purchase of the birthday, and it is single by rule. Preferred is visvim's General Store and Gallery at 1-22-11 Aobadai, a short walk off the river: the brand's flagship since July 2022, a house whose garden the master gardener Sadao Yasumoro built out of wood and stone gathered from mountains and riverbeds, with tin pedestals, stencil-dyed fusuma screens and a coffee counter inside. Eleven until eight. The alternate is AMORE's Aoyama room, ten until eight, by appointment, and only if the intended present is a premium vintage bag — but that shop was already walked on Sunday morning, and it sits on the far side of Shibuya in Jingūmae, which means choosing it also cancels the hour by the river. No wish list has been written; T-11 falls due on the 29th.
The birthday's serious hour, and the plan puts it in the hottest part of the day on purpose. Sixth-floor gallery at 1-7-2 Kyōbashi, five minutes from Tokyo Station's Yaesu central exit. Ettore Sottsass: Design begins where magic begins runs from 23 June to 4 October, and the same ticket carries the Takiguchi Shūzō show of writing and drawing running beside it. Entry is timed and bought ahead: ¥1,200 each online against ¥1,500 at the door, and a slot that fills cannot be joined. There is also a pair ticket at ¥2,200 for two, on sale only until 18 September, which saves ¥200 and gives up the timed slot in exchange. Tuesday hours are 10:00 to 18:00, last entry at half past five. Nothing is bought; T-14 falls due on the 29th.
Shirokane 5-10-10, on Kitasato-dōri, open since September 2019. Tomoharu Arai fished off Nagashima in Kagoshima for three years from the age of fifteen, and the shop carries that island's name instead of his own, out of gratitude. Four years in a washoku kitchen, six in a Nihonbashi sushi shop, then Ginza Onodera, then two and a half years running its Honolulu counter and a spell in New York. One hinoki counter, seven seats. The omakase is ¥25,000 a head, tax in and drinks out — six or seven tsumami and about fifteen nigiri served alternately, tuna from Yamayuki, the rice two grains blended with two red vinegars from Yokoi. Open 18:00 to 23:30, closed Sundays and public holidays; cards yes, electronic money no. Two sittings show online, 18:00 and 20:15. T-06 asked for this booking by 9 August, and it is still open.
Ebisu-nishi 1-5-8, ground floor of the DIS building, opened in 2010 as Bar Tram's second room. Thirteen seats, black, glass-fronted onto a back street, and no reservations of any kind — the bar asks that parties be four or fewer. The name means a trench: somewhere to drop below the line for a while, make a plan with friends, and then go forward again. It has appeared in the world bar rankings every year since 2014, its chief bartender judges the world finals, and the shelf runs to herbal liqueurs and absinthe rather than the usual. Open every day, six until two; signatures were ¥1,750 to ¥1,950 plus ten per cent when the menu was last read. If the thirteen seats are gone, TRIAD is the same family a few streets off at Ebisu-nishi 1-4-1 — fourth floor by its own lift, built to look like an old railway station, larger, no table charge, seven until two, and it does take bookings.
The last of four Nihonbashi nights and the last night of the trip. Today the hotel is not only a bed: the ninety minutes between 15:45 and 17:15 are the reason the route doubles back at all, and the public bath is what they are for. The booking is still the loose thread it has been all week — on 25 August the hotel could not find the direct reservation by name and asked for booking-completion evidence, and its agreement to hold the forwarded cases hangs on that same verification. Checkout is noon tomorrow; the plan leaves at 09:15 with the cases stored.
