THE SAGANO BAMBOO PATH

DAY VI · 7 SEPTEMBER · 嵯峨野
THE QUIET SIDE OF SAGA
Out of Rinn at half past seven, one seated train to Nijo, one more to Saga-Arashiyama, and the bamboo corridor before the coaches reach it. Then a garden an actor built, the lanes behind it that nobody walks, tofu inside a temple, and an afternoon that is deliberately spent lying down — because the door at the tea house locks at 15:45 and the eel is at half past five.
Leave Rinn at half past seven. Higashiyama to Nijo is one seat on the Tōzai Line — no line change underground, no walk through Kyoto Station — and Nijo hands you straight to the JR Sagano Line for Saga-Arashiyama. Both JR legs sit inside the Sep 5–11 JR-WEST pass if it has been bought and activated; the subway is paid on IC either way. Recheck the exact weekday departures the evening before.
Thirty minutes in the bamboo corridor while it still belongs to nobody — this is the whole reason for the half-past-seven start. Then Ōkōchi Sansō the moment it opens: the circular garden an actor built into the hillside, all architecture and borrowed scenery, where the thousand-yen ticket includes a bowl of matcha and a sweet at the end of the loop. Kyoto's own guide calls this the peaceful half of Arashiyama. The slopes are slippery in rain.
From Ōkōchi the route drifts downhill rather than back to the crowds: Rakushisha seen from the gate, open fields, and the lower end of the preserved Saga-Toriimoto street with its thatched roofs and plaster fronts. Exteriors only, at whatever speed the morning allows. This is the block that gets cut — in heat, in rain, or when the legs say so — and cutting it costs the day nothing.
Chikusen sits inside the grounds of Seiryō-ji and uses tofu from Morika, the Saga maker down the road. In heat, order two chilled sets at ¥4,345 each; in cooler rain take the yudofu, or split the difference — one chilled, one yudofu-and-fresh-yuba at ¥4,950 — and taste them against each other. Leave at ten to one. Nothing else at Seiryō-ji today.
The eighty minutes flat at Rinn from two o'clock exist so this hour lands well. One shared session, guided in English: a seasonal namagashi, two bowls of matcha, and the whisk put in your own hands — ¥5,500 each. Doors open at 15:40 and are locked when the session starts; one minute late means no entry, no refund, no other date. Wear socks. Ten places showed on 26 August; none is held.
Walk east from the tea house, or take one stop on the Tōzai Line if the legs have had enough. Kane-yo has grilled eel on Shinkyōgoku for over a century, and its kinshi-don hides the Edo-style eel under a whole Kyoto dashimaki: two regular bowls at ¥3,000 each, or the weekday small set at ¥2,400 if the tofu is still with you. Monday service ends at 20:30, last orders at eight. Reserve seating only, and ask for a first-floor table.
Shirakawa, Higashiyama — six nights, the second of them. Higashiyama station is the front door of the whole day: one Tōzai seat out to Nijo in the morning, one back for the afternoon rest, one more to the tea house.

The route is split at the walkable Saga block and the protected hotel reset. Exact rail choices, any comfort taxi and the tea lockout remain in the guide.
