THE SENBON TORII
2026
DAY V · 6 SEPTEMBER · 有馬 → 京都
THE MOUNTAIN IS SAVED FOR LAST
One more bath, one more mountain village breakfast, and then four trains in ninety minutes put us in Kyoto before ten. The middle of the day is deliberately small — a hall of a thousand and one Kannon, lunch inside a working sake brewery, an hour of cold coffee — because the last thing is the long one. Inariyama has been a place of prayer since 711 and carries about ten thousand gates. We take it at the end of the afternoon, when the heat lets go, and we do not go over the top.

JR SPECIAL RAPID — NOT THE TŌKAIDŌ SHINKANSEN
The ryokan's morning shuttle does not run until nine, so leave the building on foot at 08:05 and walk down to the station, or ask the desk the night before for a taxi. From Shin-Kobe west the pass carries everything — but only the conventional line into Kyoto. The Tōkaidō Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Kyoto is outside it, twelve tempting minutes that would have to be bought twice.
The one indoor thing in the day, and it is enormous: a hundred and twenty metres of Kamakura hall, a National Treasure, holding the seated Senju Kannon and a thousand standing ones. All 1,001 have only stood together since 2018, when the last figures came home from the National Museum and the twenty-eight guardians, Fūjin and Raijin were set back into their Kamakura arrangement. September hours are 08:30 to 17:00, the desk closes half an hour early, and Keihan Shichijō is seven minutes away on foot.
Torisei is the tap room of Yamamoto Honke, brewing in Fushimi since 1677, and it sits inside one of the house's own kura — a Taishō to early-Shōwa storehouse with the ceiling left high and the beams left showing. A tank in the middle of the ground floor holds unpasteurised nama-genshu sent straight from the plant, and the branded chicken arrives daily and goes onto the charcoal one skewer at a time. Open eleven to ten, closed Mondays; the sixth is a Sunday.
This is not a coffee break, it is the recovery block, and it replaces the room nap the day cannot afford. ABOUT US roasts its own in Fushimi; the roaster holds a CQI Q Arabica Grader licence and took World Discover at the 2022 Coffee Collection. The shop's own page publishes no hours, so its Instagram gets checked on the fifth. Sit for the whole fifty minutes, drink something cold, fill both bottles, and put the repellent and the small light somewhere you can reach.
Start at the bottom and do it properly. The Rōmon was given by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in 1589 — a pledge made when his mother fell ill, and the ink text found inside it during repairs proved the story true. Past the Honden the Senbon Torii close over the path; worshippers have been donating gates like these since the Edo period, and about ten thousand of them now stand on the mountain. Okusha Hōhaisho sits where they end, with the three peaks behind it and the omokaru-ishi in the corner.
Above Okusha there is a quieter line, and the city maps it: Kandakara-jinja, the Takenoshita bamboo path, the Kōbō and Shichimen waterfall ground, rejoining the standard trail below the crossroads. It is a dry-trail option only — wet stone, thunder or tired legs and we simply stay on the main route, which loses nothing. Yotsutsuji is where Inariyama finally opens over Kyoto. Sunset is 18:18. Down the ordinary way afterwards, with a light in a pocket.
Six nights from tonight — a 36 m² superior twin in Shirakawa, and the base for everything up to the twelfth. Check-in runs 16:00 to 21:00 and needs advance contact after that, so the desk is told this morning to expect us about eight. Both forwarded cases should already be waiting.
